Week Ten: 8th to 11th of June, 2010

I spent the days reading about geographic information system (GIS).
Geographical information system, is any system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to location. In the simplest terms, GIS is the merging of cartography and database technology. GIS systems are used in cartography, remote sensing, land surveying, utility management, photogrammetry, geography, urban planning, emergency management, navigation, and localized search engines.
I learned that GIS is based on the following:
• Drawing using AutoCAD
• Drawing single diagram (SLD)
• Technical Rating Field (Field data collection form ) (using Excel)
In TNB, GIS is used to locate the manholes positions and ducts path and helping in managing the distribution process.

Red lines represent the ducts path
Yellow squares represent the manhole positions
