I joined Mr. Mohsin to site PPU- CJ9 to attend a water jetting process. The purpose of the operation is to check the validation of the ducts and check if there is any blocking or damage in any of the ducts.

I joined Mr. Mohsin to site SSU Google CJ9. The project involves a construction of 33KV manhole.
I had learned about the reinforcement installation and how they place the steel bars in positions by tie them using small steel fibers.

Week Four: Tuesday, 27th of April, 2010

I joined Mr. Khairul to site 17. RK3. The project at the site is involves installing 6 pre-cast manholes and the ducting path between them.

I learned about how the ducts are arranged on position using wood separators. The wood separators also help holding the ducts above the ground surface in order to allow a free concrete spreading under and around the ducts.

Week Four: Monday, 26th of April, 2010

I joined Mr. Khairul to site 18. R5. The project at the site involves constructing residential properties and installation of 13 pre-cast manholes for electric supply requirement.
TNB consideration is supervising the installation of the manholes and making sure the work finishes in schedule.

Week Three



I continued joining Mr. Fadzli to BR2 Site for another four days as fellow.

Tuesday, 20th of April, 2010:
The works involved at BR2 is concreting of one section of the ducts path.




Wednesday, 21st of April, 2010
The concreting works was continued and finished to sections along the ducts path.





Thursday, 22nd of April, 2010
The works involved removing the framework and then leaving the concrete to be dried until the next day.




Friday, 23rd of April, 2010
In the morning,all trainees were asked by the Human Resource Department to attend a seminar called Majlis Pelan Caran Kempen Menana 26 juta Pokok, done by YB DATO SRI. DOUGLAS UGGAH EMBAS in presient 4, 62574 Putrajaya. TNBD was involved with many other companies at Putr Jaya to join by planting trees.
At the evening, back filling and compaction was done at BR2 site.

Week Three: Monday, 19th of April, 2010 (CONSTRUCTION WEEK )

I started the construction stage by joining the construction unit. The unit consideration is supervising the civil works of TNB. The unit members have to make sure that the work done by contractor is going correctly and in schedule. It involves daily ecording and daily site visiting.
Mr. Fadzli has asked me to join him to the site Laluan BR2, Persiaran Utara, PutraJaya to have a close view of the construction works. I joined him for the whole week and I learned a lot of things during the works processes.
The project involves the following:
1. Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD), which was taking under the bridge located at the site.
2. Excavation at the ducting path
3. Installing the PVC pipes and connects them between the located manholes to the PN pipes.
4. Constructing the ducting framework
5. Concreting the ducts path.
6. Taking off the framework
7. Back filling.
8. Compaction.

Today’s work involved pipes connection checking and preparing final works before concreting.

Week two: Friday 16th of April, 2010

In the morning, I finished reading the report which was given to me by eng. Zaidi. At the afternoon, there was a staff meeting which included an explanation of the statistics and achievements of the company.
There was also a rewarding to some of the staff and saying goodbye for some staff who are going to move out of TNBD Putra Jaya.

Week two: Thursday 15th of April, 2010

I spent the day reading the full report of one project that was done at Cyberjaya which was given to me by Eng. Nor Zaidi bin Abdul Majib on the second day of my training program.
As I wasn’t able to finish the report on the second day, I managed to finish it in these two days in order to have a full view of the project before I leave the planning unit and join the construction unit in the following two weeks.
The report contains all information and details involved in manhole, ducts and cable installation as the following:

1.The agreement and appendix:
Contains all contract conditions and agreement forms between the contractor and TNB.
2.Particular conditions for short form of contract:
Contains all modification done by TNB to the general form of contract.
3.General conditions of contract:
Contains all general short form of contract without the modifications.
4.The bill of quantities:
Contains all materials quantities that will be used in the project
Contains all prices and charges related to materials, laborites and unknown civil work conditions.
5.Specification for the installation of underground cable ducts and manholes:
Contains all conditions, requirements, schedules, responsibilities, types, cases and methods, which are involved in excavation works and all civil works at Putrajaya.

Week two: Wednesday, 14th of April, 2010

I was given an example for a manhole design Mr.Awbtar, which contain all sketching and calculation for the reinforcement design.
The design was taken from TNB supplier factory of the manhole, since the design work is not practiced at TNB.
I spent the day reading the structural design steps of manholes that are cast in situ and comparing what I have learned with the factory design.

Week two: Tuesday, 13th of April, 2010

I continued reading what I was assigned to read by Mrs. Nurul Azni which is studying the construction process of the ducts and manholes.
Around 10 am I was called by Eng. Nor Zaidi bin Abdul Majib, who assigned me to join TNB team who were about to go to a manhole factory at the time.

Manhole factory visit
A visit was conducted by TNB team to a manhole Factory named “Target”. The team representatives are Mr. Awbtar “civil engineer of TNB construction unit”, Mr. Mohd Ridzwan bin Kadir “electrical power engineer at planning unit”, and me.
The factory is located at Lot1894, Jalan KPB 5, Kawasan Perindustrian Balakong, 43300 Seri Kembangan, Selangor Darul Ehsan.
The visit took around three hours time starting around 10:30 am, on Tuesday 13th April 13, 2010. The purpose of the visit is to check the factory product quality and contract conditions in order to approve Target as a supplier for TNB.
We were welcomed by Ms. Josephine Choong, “the sales and marketing manager”, who introduced us to the factory management team and engineers. After that Ms. Choong took us around the factory sections. Then she showed us the example for a manhole which was designed to be used in TNB projects.
After that, we went to the meeting room for discussion session. Mr.Awbtar, has added some conditions into the design of the manhole which suits TNB requirement.
After that we left the factory heading back to the office.

I read about the different types of ducts and manholes used in the project which are classified according to the voltage transforming as bellow:

b) 33KV

Week one: Friday, 9th of April 2010

I was given a brief overview of the planning department tasks, by Mrs. Nurul Azni (planning Department). She has illustrated to me the two types of manhole cross section of typical 33KV/11KV cable ducting for road crossing & road shoulder that are used by TNB.
I had also read the instructions booklet of ducts, manholes and cables installation for 11KV and LV system that are used at Putrajaya and Cyberjaya. The booklet also explains and covers the following:

1.Instructions to tender
o Acceptance of tender and Contractor’s responsibilities
o Terms and conditions of tender e.g. payment, taxation, insurances… etc.
2.Special conditions for work in Putra Jaya
3.Work schedules and work method statements which must include:
o Surveying
o Trench/ manhole excavation
o Back filling and compaction
o Safety precautions
4.Ducts site construction:
o Cleaning and testing of ducts
o Ducts plugs
o Method of installing pipes in concrete:

Week one: Thursday, 8th of April 2010 (PLANNING WEEK)

I was given the general short form of contract booklet by Eng. Nor Zaidi bin Abdul Majib, which is issued by the international federation of consulting Engineers (FIDIC)* which include the general agreements conditions, rules for adjudication and notes for guidance for civil works. He also gave me a report for a real project of TNB which apply the short form conditions with some modification in order to suit the company rules and ability to finish the project. It also contains the bill of quantities and all civil works specifications that are involved in the project which are:
1.Site clearing
2.Earth works
3.Concrete works
4.Steel works
That project was done by FASTPRO SDN BHD at Cyberjaya north PMU Putrajaya central, and involves ducts, manholes and cables installation for 11KV and LV systems.
I spent the day reading the general short form booklet and comparing it with the applied rules by TNB. It was useful for me as it showed me many rules of contract that I was not aware of them.
E.g. of some modifications:
In section 10 of the general short form of contract which involve the variation and claims, subpart 10.4 involves the “right to claim” policy, is stated as bellow:
“If the contractor incurs cost as a result of any of the employer’s Liabilities, the contractor shall be entitled to the amount of such Cost. If as a result of any of the Employer’s Liabilities, it is necessary to change the works, this shall be dealt with as a variation”
The modification is as below:
“Add “except for the cost incurred from rectifying any loss or damage to contractor’s Equipment” at the end of the 1st sentence”

Week one: Wednesday 7th of April 2010

I reach the company around 9am which is considered late in the company rules. The reason of being late is that I wasn’t familiar with the way to the company and I did not know that it will be traffic jam as it was.
Firstly I met Poan. Elyana, who has gave me the attendance card. She also gave me my training time schedule which shows the training process as bellow:

I was then introduced to En. Zaidi, who is taking place as the civil engineer of TNB, putrajaya. He introduced me to all staff and departments at the company. He also gave me a brief explanation on all training stages and the civil works practiced at TNB putrajaya.
Then, En. Zaidi had given me a booklet that contain the safety procedures and elements that involve the confined space entry. He also gave me previous projects that were done by the TNB Putrajaya which helped me to get an overview about the civil works implemented and the safety cautions.
The booklet which is titled as “Confined Space Safety Course”, contain and introduce the uses and the hazards involved at the confined space. It also contains the entry procedure, rescue procedure and the equipment used.

The selection of the personal protective equipment depends on the following:
 The suitable and effective for the task
 According to availability, appropriateness and suitability for the wearer
 Proper fit of the equipment
 The personal protective equipment
