Week Ten: 8th to 11th of June, 2010

I spent the days reading about geographic information system (GIS).
Geographical information system, is any system that captures, stores, analyzes, manages, and presents data that are linked to location. In the simplest terms, GIS is the merging of cartography and database technology. GIS systems are used in cartography, remote sensing, land surveying, utility management, photogrammetry, geography, urban planning, emergency management, navigation, and localized search engines.
I learned that GIS is based on the following:
• Drawing using AutoCAD
• Drawing single diagram (SLD)
• Technical Rating Field (Field data collection form ) (using Excel)
In TNB, GIS is used to locate the manholes positions and ducts path and helping in managing the distribution process.

Red lines represent the ducts path
Yellow squares represent the manhole positions

For today I sat the complete outline and ordering of the HDD work process as follow:
Objective:
The objective of HDD is inserting the ducts along a horizontal line as needed in order to connect and continue the ducts path.

Permits:
1.Construction permit (module 1: sec.1.3.2)
2.Excavation permit (module 1: sec.1.3.4)

Equipment:
1.Excavator
2.HDD Drilling Machine
3.PN pipes
4.Rollers
5.Pulling head
6.Reamer
7.End cap
8.Bentonite

Steps:
1.Surveying and target setting
2.Excavation of entry and exit pits
3.Drilling at the entry pit to reach the exit pit
4.Back drilling using the Reamer in order to make the hole wider and pulling the pipes by connecting the reamer to the pulling head that is attached to the pipes
5.Back filling & compaction
6.Paving and repairing the damaged facilities. E.g. walking side, vegetation.

Cautions and Preventing:
1.Utility mapping must be done using Global penetration Radar (GPR) to avoid damaging any other system pipes such as gas and sewerage pipes, during excavation. See (SOP module 1: sec.5.1)
2.Compaction process should be done in layers according to the compactor type to avoid any settlement in the soil.
3.E.g. for 1 ton roller compactor, every 300mm of the soil should be compacted.
4.Install the end cap at the end of each pipe to prevent the pipes from blocking.
